DAP and Digital Product Passport: why EPDs are now a strategic asset

Far from becoming obsolete with the new regulation, the Environmental Product Declarations become the verified database on which the future digital passport of materials will be built.

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) introduces the Digital Product Passport (DPP), a digital register with information on the composition, origin, durability and environmental impact of each product. For construction materials, this passport will be nourished by much of the information already contained in the Environmental Product Declarations today.

Here’s a major mindset shift for manufacturers. The temptation is to see the DPP only as a legal obligation that will have to be complied with. But the resilient approach is the opposite: those who already have DAPs that comply with the EN 15804 standard reach the new stage with advanced work, while those who do not have them will have to start from scratch under calendar pressure.

It is also worth anticipating a challenge that other sectors are already well aware of: the quality and consistency of data. When each customer requests the information in a different format, the manufacturer spends more time on administration than on improving its product. Standardizing how data is collected and declared, rather than multiplying requests, is what makes the system work.
