Wood and bio-based materials: when the material captures more carbon than it emits

The structure and envelope concentrate most of the embodied carbon of a building, so the material with which they are built is decisive. This is where bio-based materials come into play: sustainably sourced wood, for example, fixes more carbon during its growth than its production emits, so it acts as a temporary CO₂ storage while it is part of the building.

Beyond wood, there is a whole range of options to reduce the footprint of materials: concrete with additions that replace part of clinker, steel with a high recycled content, insulation of natural origin and products designed to be dismantled and reused.
