Wood and bio-based materials: when the material captures more carbon than it emits

Not all materials add up to emissions. Some, such as sustainably sourced wood, store carbon. Choosing the right material is one of the most impactful decisions of the entire project.

The structure and envelope concentrate most of the embodied carbon of a building, so the material with which they are built is decisive. This is where bio-based materials come into play: sustainably sourced wood, for example, fixes more carbon during its growth than its production emits, so it acts as a temporary CO₂ storage while it is part of the building.

Beyond wood, there is a whole range of options to reduce the footprint of materials: concrete with additions that replace part of clinker, steel with a high recycled content, insulation of natural origin and products designed to be dismantled and reused. None of these options are universal; The best combination depends on the project, the climate and the structural requirements, and this is precisely where the technical analysis adds value.

For manufacturers, the demand for low-carbon materials is a clear opportunity for differentiation, as long as they can prove it with verified data. For specifiers and construction companies, knowing the real footprint of each alternative allows them to decide with criteria and justify the choice before the customer and the regulations.
