Envolta publishes informative guide to promote Biogas in Catalonia

Envolta Energia, together with the Bioenergy Cluster of Catalonia and the BETA Technology Center, presents a guide to catalyze the growth of the biogas and biomethane sector in Catalonia. This informative guide offers a comprehensive vision of biogas, from its production to its application, driving the transition towards a sustainable energy future. The Biogas Impulsa't project, funded by ACCIÓ, within the framework of the Competitive Reinforcement Initiatives, is accompanied by an informative video showing success stories of plants in our territory.
“Without biogas there is no energy transition”

“Without biogas there is no energy transition”
The climate and energy crises we are experiencing have accelerated the process of looking for alternative energy sources to fossil fuels. Bioenergy is the most circular and social option. It is also a key factor in the country’s decarbonisation and energy transition process, acting with a triple mitigation effect. It is a renewable gas, composed mainly of methane and carbon dioxide, which is obtained from the decomposition of organic matter.

Biogas represents an opportunity to promote the circular bioeconomy, converting waste into energy.

On the way to a circular, sustainable, local and competitive economic model

Apart from representing a sustainable alternative to natural gas of fossil origin for heating, industry and transport, it also reduces greenhouse gases and gives the possibility of generating organic fertilizers. Biogas contributes to solving environmental challenges such as improving the management of livestock manure; the recovery of biogas from landfills; the recovery of agricultural and industrial waste, and the recovery of urban organic waste and sludge from wastewater treatment plants. In other words, its great added value makes it possible to reduce pollution while converting waste into resources.

Catalonia is on the move towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. It represents one of the regions with the greatest production potential in the European Union, but it is still far behind in the development of the biogas sector compared to other European countries such as France, Italy, Germany and Denmark. The Catalan territory currently has only 68 biogas plants, of which 5 purify biogas into biomethane and inject it into the natural gas network.

The power of biogas: transforming waste into clean energy

The main objective of the project is to bring the sector closer to the public, and accelerate the transition towards an energy model focused on organic waste in our territory. After an exhaustive research on the current situation of the sector here and in other countries in Catalonia, a guide has been prepared where success stories of plants in the territory are presented, as well as success models of countries such as perhaps Germany with a total of more than 11,000 biogas plants and 238 biomethane plants, representing almost 40% of all European production.

Màrius Aguirre, president of the Biogas Commission of the Bioenergy Cluster of Catalonia and co-director of Envolta Energia, comments:

“taking advantage of our international experience on behalf of Envolta, we did not want to leave the possibility to evaluate what the current state is, incentives and strategies of benchmark countries to inspire us in Catalonia” during the presentation day at the Forum. “The European Union is committed to biogas and biomethane, understands that it is a key element for the energy transition, for the impact it has on decarbonization, and where it has the greatest impact is on the recovery of organic waste and livestock manure”.

Highlights of the Guide:

  • Discover the potential of biogas as a sustainable energy source.
    • Dissemination of biogas: An in-depth view of what biogas is and how it is produced, explained in an accessible way for all readers.

Project presentation at the Biogas Forum in Granollers:

Co-led by Envolta Energia and its key collaborators, the Bioenergy Cluster of Catalonia and the BETA Technology Center, the project has been a successful teamwork. Together, they have launched the definitive guide: “Guide for the Sustainable Development of Biogas and Biomethane in Catalonia” at the Ciutat de Granollers hotel on September 28, 2023. With an attendance of more than 200 people, including people from different departments of the Environment of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Sustainability that makes B2B grow

In many B2B markets, sustainability has ceased to be just a compliance requirement to become a factor of competitiveness. When a product or service helps the customer reduce impact (especially in its Scope 3), the conversation shifts from justifying prices to creating value: better access, more share and, in certain cases, better price premium.
