Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of buildings: what it is, phases and regulations

The digitization of the project is not just about drawing in 3D. Connecting the BIM model with the life cycle calculation allows you to see the impact of each decision in real time, when it can still be changed.

A well-structured BIM model contains information on all elements of the building: quantities of material, construction systems, dimensions. This same information is what a life cycle analysis calculation needs. Connecting the two allows you to estimate the carbon footprint of the building directly from the model and, above all, to compare design alternatives by measuring their impact before deciding.

The advantage is timing: if carbon calculation is integrated into the digital workflow, it is no longer a report that is made at the end to become a decision-making tool in the project phase, which is when each change has the greatest effect on the footprint and on the cost. Here, as in any life cycle calculation, the quality of the result depends on the quality of the data: the more specific the material data, the more reliable the estimate.

Digitization also provides traceability and consistency. A single model as a data source avoids the fragmentation of information scattered across spreadsheets and disconnected documents, and makes it easier for carbon calculation, documentation for certifications and, in the future, the Digital Product Passport to all start from the same verified basis. It is the natural bridge between engineering and the sustainability of the building.
